So what is this blog about?
Falling For Fernweh is about falling in love with my travels, myself, photography and a renewal of wanderlust. I feel like I have more to share than just my facebook posts, and after multiple friends mentioned that I should start a blog…One night, on a street in Barcelona while having a paella and wine dinner for one, I decided it was a good idea to at least try.
and I do handstands everywhere I go.
What is ‘fernweh’?
Originally a German word used to describe the need for distance, the wish to experience something far away from home, the urge to escape from your everyday life by travelling. It is the opposite of homesickness.
It is an ache for places you have not been yet, a craving for adventures.
What is your travel experience?
I was raised in Texas by two Kentucky natives who love to sail. In fact, they love to sail so much that, in 1997, they both quit their jobs, took my brother out of school to boat school him and rented our house out so that we could sail the Caribbean for over a year! To say that I had an awesome childhood would be an understatement.
In 1997, we sailed around the islands of the Caribbean for 13 months before a reef ruined the hull of our boat, Orontes. We sailed from Texas to St. Lucia and were headed back to Texas when we ran aground off the coast of Puerto Rico.
side note- my parents have a blog and they have letters that were sent home from our adventures on Orontes here: Orontes trip 1997-1998. They are currently retired and sailing the world on their newest sailboat, Orontes II. she is a custom design Amazon 49 and she is a beast.
I was 4 years old, had my 5th birthday in Puerto Rico with a bunch of Aussies on the beach, and had many other incredible adventures along the way. After that trip my parents saved all their money again for our future adventures and since our Orontes trip, I have been to the following countries and states:
34 countries and islands:
Anegada / Antigua / Bahamas / Barbados / Belize / British Virgin Islands / Canada / Cayman Islands/ Dominica/ Dominican Republic / El Salvador / Guadalupe / Greece and Greek Isles / Grenada / Hong Kong / Jamaica / Japan / Martinique / Mexico / Morocco / Portugal / Puerto Rico / Singapore / Spain / St. Barths / St. Kitts / St. Lucia / St. Martin / St. Vincent / Switzerland / Thailand / Turks and Caicos / United States of America / United States Virgin Islands
Alabama / Alaska / Arizona / Arkansas / Colorado / Delaware / Florida / Georgia / Indiana / Kentucky / Louisiana / Mississippi / New Jersey / New York / North Carolina / New Mexico / Ohio / Oklahoma / Pennsylvania / Utah / Tennessee / Texas
Where are you headed next?
This is a secret- but it’s going to be my most epic trip yet!
What do you do for work?
Right now, I am a travel agent with Gullivers Travel Service in Fort Worth, Texas. One of the main reasons I have been able to travel so much after college is because of this epic job. Not only is personal travel encouraged, but the company sends us on work related trips almost yearly. Plus: we have a stress drawer that is all chocolate; I bring my dog to work twice a week; there are three full time dogs that belong to the owners here, so cuddles are always an option; and my coworkers rock. I feel like I have a family here.
So here it goes!
onward and upward,
